Why is Adult Mental Health important?
Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological and social well-being and it will have an impact on the way that we feel, act and think. Our mental health will dictate how we are able to handle the stresses in life, how we make decisions and the way that we will relate to those in our life – at work and at home. Importantly we should be aware that everyone has mental health.
Understanding that everyone has mental health means that we all have a responsibility to look out for each other, those we work with, our friends and family. Our mental health is on a continuum, and we will all have days when it is okay not to be okay. First Aid for Mental Health Awareness enables individuals to provide the initial support for someone experiencing a mental health problem until professional help is received or until the crisis is resolved.
Below are the First Aid for Mental Health Awareness courses that are on offer. Giving employees the opportunity to attend one of these courses will help them to understand more about mental health and develop the confidence to start conversations with others about their mental health.
According to research by University of Warwick, addressing wellbeing at work increases productivity by up to 12%. The government’s Stevenson-Farmer Review of Mental Health and Employers in 2017 states that:
“The human cost is huge, with poor mental health having an impact on the lives of many individuals and those around them. This manifests itself in a variety of ways both at work and at home and impacts a person’s ability to manage other elements of their personal life.
Then there is the ultimate human cost of loss of life through suicide. We know that rates of poor mental health and suicide are higher for employees in certain industries.”
