Why is First Aid for Youth Mental Health important?
A recent study by the Health Foundation highlighted the particular challenges faced by the current generation of young people in moving from childhood to a successful, financially independent adult life. These practical challenges were exacerbated by a lack of emotional support, with only 49% of participants reporting they got the emotional support they needed when growing up. The impact of the Covid Pandemic will only have exacerbated mental health issues amongst young people and so one important step forward would be to support initiatives to educate and empower everyone in contact with children and young people (from young people themselves, to family members, schoolteachers, youth workers, and others) to provide such emotional support, and to understand when a referral to a GP or CAMHS professional is needed. This is where First Aid for Youth Mental Health comes into play.
This qualification has been designed with children and young people in mind covering areas such as depression, self-harm, eating disorders and bullying and will provide the knowledge and skills to identify a potential mental health condition, start a conversation, and provide support and guidance to professional help.
Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can go to get help.
This qualification is suitable for pupils aged 14 and over and requires 6 guided learning hours. It would be recommended that the guided learning hours are split into either two or three sessions. There is the possibility of certification for attendance of the course and pupils will gain a recognised qualification that they can use to access further mental health courses at a higher level.
